HSSCU Higher Education Scholarships
At HSSCU, we are passionate about helping our members with their educational pursuits. We are well aware that education can be one of the most important aspects of someone’s life and we are thrilled to help make it easier for our members. With that in mind, we provide €50,000 in scholarship funds each year. Whether studying for a degree, diploma, master’s, or any further education course, our members can apply for a HSSCU scholarship. So far we have helped with physiotherapy, art courses, disability studies, and more. What’s more, it doesn’t matter what year of your course you’re in! This year, we decided to extend our application closing date to September 17th due to the later Leaving Certificate results. Hi Rebecca, tell us about yourself!
I am a qualified pharmacist for nearly five years. However, while working full-time I knew pharmacy was not my true vocation. Being so young doing the leaving cert I panicked and stuck pharmacy down as I liked science in school but didn’t really fully understand what the job entailed. I now have gone back to college full-time in UCC and am going into my third year of dentistry and feel as though it was the best decision I have ever made.
Going back as a mature student is a huge financial strain, paying for fees and dental equipment of up to €14,000 each year.
How did you hear about HSSCU’s Higher Education Scholarships?
When browsing online to find ways to support myself, I decided to apply for the HSSCU Higher Education Scholarship. I stumbled across it on the website and saw adverts when I dropped into its branch in The Liberties. After reading the requirements to apply, I decided to submit an application not thinking that one-day Pádraig Power would call me to say that I had won €11,000! I will never forget this morning when I received the phone call. My mam had heard screams coming from my bedroom, thinking that I had fallen and badly hurt myself! I was over the moon!!
How did the scholarship help you with your education?
Winning this scholarship has reduced the stress of constantly worrying about money and savings for the forthcoming years. It has allowed me to just focus on my studies. I am so grateful to HSSCU for awarding me this opportunity as it has made my journey much easier by reducing the emotional burden of financial constraints. It has also allowed me to enjoy life more and be able to have money to experience eating out again with friends and family that I have not seen since pre-COVID.
I would recommend applying to anyone if they feel as though they were in a similar position to me – struggling to pay college fees, rent, travel, and other college-related expenses.
