HSSCU Higher Education Scholarships
At HSSCU, we are passionate about helping our members with their educational pursuits. We are well aware that education can be one of the most important aspects of someone’s life and we are thrilled to help make it easier for our members. With that in mind, we provide €50,000 in scholarship funds each year. Whether studying for a degree, diploma, masters or any further education course, our members can apply for a HSSCU scholarship. So far we have helped with physiotherapy, art courses, disability studies and more – and what’s more, it doesn’t matter what year of your course you’re in. This year, we decided to extend our application closing date to September 21st due to the later Leaving Certificate results. Barbara Barry
My name is Barbara and I work as a Nurse Manager in the Mater Hospital. I decided to do a Masters degree at 58 years of age. It was always a dream of mine to do one in Healthcare Management and over the years was unable to because of financial pressures and rearing 4 children. The Health Services Staffs Credit Union has always been a great help to me and my family over the years with loans and the Betty Noone bursary. My husband works for the HSE and is a member also and we borrowed from the HSSCU for house renovations. I also borrowed to pay for the first year of my Master’s degree. I felt guilty that I was spending this money, when it could have been used for other essentials, but I was determined to get my degree. The hospital helped with half of the fees, but I applied to the credit union for the scholarship to help with the rest, plus other expenses for the degree. I couldn’t believe it when I got a call from Pádraig to say that I had won. I started to cry and was over the moon and in total shock. This meant so much to me, the fact of winning and the relief of not worrying about the fees for the next year. I am still on cloud nine. I have never won anything, but this was just amazing. I am still overcome. I have completed my masters with honours at almost 60 and I am so happy. It has helped my confidence and I love my work in the hospital and hope I have helped both patients and staff with my newfound knowledge!!!! I would recommend as many people as possible to be a part of the HSSCU and my daughters are all members! We are in the prize draw monthly and are always hopeful of winning something in the draw!! I am very grateful to the HSSCU for this scholarship.
